Recap: Youth Voice Storytelling Camp
This summer, P4L provided young people who had participated in the Strong African American Families (SAAF) program with the opportunity to enhance their leadership skills and educate their peers with the knowledge they gained.
Our Storytelling Camp took place from July 29 to August 1, 2025, in the Leimert Park community of South Los Angeles. We partnered with Morris Media Studios Broadcast Academy to bring our curriculum to life which instructed young people on how to create a podcast. This included:
Researching engaging topics
Developing captivating scripts
Recording effective podcasts
To promote cultural pride and foster positive racial identity development. The curriculum also featured a history of African-American leadership in broadcast journalism and its political and economic impacts.
Bridging Past and Present Leadership
Visit to the historic KBLA Talk 1580 Radio Station
Participants connected historical leadership with current practices by visiting KBLA Talk 1580 Radio Station, where they learned about a variety of career opportunities in broadcasting. They then had the chance to take on roles in podcast production, developing and recording their own episodes. These episodes focused on topics they explored in the SAAF curriculum, such as:
Insights for parents and adults about the challenges of being a kid today
Important messages for their peers drawn from their experiences in making healthy decisions
Stay tuned to our podcast to hear what our young people have to say!
